LC Paper wins a prize for its energy efficiency
On October 15, the Pulp and Paper International Awards 2011 event took place. L.C.Paper 1881 SA was a finalist for the award for Efficiency Improvements of the Year, an award sponsored by EKA Chemicals Swedish company. The award was a recognision of the energy saving effort developed in our tissue machine.
“LC Paper has squeezed its energy costs for tissue production to just over half the typical cost of running a tissue machine in Europe. Since intalling a new machine in 2009, the mill’s average cost is just over 84 Euros/tonne, comparfed to an average of 157 Euros/tonne in Europe. Knowing the tissue machine hold held the key to the most potential energy savings, LC Paper began with a blank sheet of paper to see how operate as efficiently as possible and integrate with its co-generation facility.”
The CEO of LC Paper, Joan Vila, attended the ceremony accompained by Luca Linares from Milltech, the Italian company that built the circuits that have allowed such energy savings.
The award was presented by EKA Chemicals. The award is a recognition of the effort we have been doing in the company since 1993 when we set up the cogeneration plant. Back then, it was the first plant with a diesel engine of 6.5 MW in Spain. In 1999, the second engine was installed (a 6 MW gas engine). In 2009 we launched the tissue machine with a patented process that takes gas from the cogeneration plant to dry the paper. In 2011 the first diesel engine is sold to Pakistan and we close the high voltage station of 132 kV and 15 MW. In 2012, we plan to install a new gas engine and 6 MW in 2013 changing the No. 2 paper machine to transform it into tissue with a further decrease of energy consumption. If the MP3 consumption has dropped from 2850 kWh/t to 2,100 kWh/t, the consumption of the MP2 will lower to 1,000 kWh/t. It's a revolution which starts with a reengineering process and ends with a product reengineering.
